Independent State of Croatia : Stamps of the first exile from 1934.
|
|
|
In the first emigration, the Ustaše issued two stamps, one with the denomination "Kuna" and one with the denomination "Banica" in Bergamo, Italy, in 1934.
The designer of the stamps was Ustasha colonel Jesensky.
In the same year, the Ustaše also issued a 5 Kuna coin. [ Read more ]
After the Second World War, the same stamps appeared with other colors (50 Banica - red / 1 Kuna - blue).
It is not known whether these are forgeries or a new post-war edition of the Croatian government in emigration.

Stamps of the croatian exile gouvenment of the Independent State of Croatia :
|
|
|
The Government of the Independent State of Croatia in emigration and HOP issued official stamps until 1972 (according to some, until 1976).
Private editions were the work of individual patriots or similar organizations and associations, but they were not recognized by the government of the Independent State of Croatia in emigration.
None of them were recognized by the postal authorities, so they were not in public use, although they appear on some letters, which nevertheless passed postal control even if the Independent State of Croatia was still a member of the UPU, because the Independent State of Croatia is legally and existed after 1945. The Independent State of Croatia never capitulated to the Yugoslav occupier! It was occupied, and the successor of the Yugoslav occupation is the Republic of Croatia.
The World Postal Union (UPU) was established in 1874 in Paris and is one of the world's oldest organizations. Today, more than 200 countries are members of the UPU.
It is interesting that in several UPU documents it can be proven that in them Croatia, as a part of Austria-Hungary, has been a member of the UPU since July 1, 1885!
The Independent State of Croatia became a member of the UPU (Union Postale Universelle) on April 14, 1942 and after World War II., the Independent State of Croatia never stopped being a member of the UPU.
That is why those editions of the government of the Independent State of Croatia in emigration are regular and should be in the Michel catalog.
With the capitulation to the Axis powers, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia ceased to exist in 1941, but in the Michel catalog, for example, you can find fantasy editions of some kind of "Yugoslav government in exile" from London. The same thing with the criminal SAO Krajina, which can also be found in Michel catalogs and which was not recognized by any country in the world, not even by Serbia itself.
At the Croatian government in Buenos Aires and Madrid, there was a Croatian reporting service with a philatelic department, which designed and issued stamps.
The primary goal of issuing stamps was to collect funds for various purposes.
Commemorative and commemorative stamps try to snatch from oblivion certain events from the distant and recent Croatian past, at the same time pointing to the aspirations of the Croatian people for their independence and at the same time waging a silent war against communism.
Symbols and images on stamps in emigration arouse patriotic and anti-communist feelings.
The publishing company "Domovina" from Madrid registers in its catalogs all the publications of the government of the Independent State of Croatia in emigration until 1975.
The first edition from 1964 was edited by Dr. Branko Marić, and the second in 1976 by Višnja Pavelić, the daughter of Poglavnik Dr. Ante Pavelić.
The stamps were sold to stamp dealers in the USA, Canada, South America and Western Europe who further distributed them around the world.
That's how some stamps reached Croatia.
The main distribution centers were in Buenos Aires, Madrid and Damascus, Syria, where the offices of the croatian government in emigration were located.
The aim of the private issues of Croatian stamps was also the promotion of Croatia, the collection of funds for various patriotic needs and actions, but speculative work is also not excluded.
Stamps were printed, sold, bought and collected. No one in the world issues stamps without a good financial performance, regardless of the purposes for which the profits will be used.
For the editions of the HSS, the Croatian Philatelic Society from Sydney, the London newspaper "Nova Hrvatska", the Croatian Franciscans from Pennsylvania and the "Croatian Social Welfare" from New York, it would be difficult to claim that their primary reasons are exclusively speculation.
Another case is with the series of UPU, birds, flowers, especially Mostar of 500 kn and some others that were issued by private hands.

|
Issue for 50 years membership of Croatia in the UPU. UPU 1874-1949.
In the catalog of postage stamps issued by Višnja Pavelić, daughter of Poglavnik Dr. Ante Pavelić, this issue is described as a "forgery".
But that is not possible, because for there to be a forgery there must be an original that is being falsified!
It seems that it is a private edition and not an edition of the Croatian government abroad.

Mostar.
35 x 28 mm. Perforated and non-perforated stamps are known.
Design of Volođa Kočiš from the year 1945. The questionable year of issue is 1964. There is a possibility that these are test stamps from 1945 that only appeared in 1964.

In the first democratic elections in 1990, the HDZ, led by Dr. Franjo Tuđman, achieved an overwhelming victory, and on May 30, a multi-party Parliament was established. The new Constitution of the Republic of Croatia from December 22, 1990 is no longer the constitution of a communist state, and the indication "Socialist" is dropped from the name: from now on the name of the state reads: Republic of Croatia.
At the Referendum on Croatian independence held on May 19, 1991, the majority of 93.24% of voters opted for an independent state. As a result of that decision, on June 25, 1991, the Parliament of the Republic of Croatia adopted the Constitutional Decision on the Sovereignty and Independence of the Republic of Croatia, establishing Croatia as an independent state. With the failure to resolve the Yugoslav crisis on October 8, 1991, he severed all state legal ties with the former Jugoslavia.
Did you know that the Republic of Croatia was already proclaimed in the 70s and that it had a "Croatian People's Committee" in Munich, which was something similar to the Croatian consular representation that issued 2 stamps of 50 and 200 Kuna that were stuck to Croatian passports but also on requests and translated documents?
Croatian passports are issued by the "Croatian National Committee". One copy of the passport can be seen in D. Oparić's catalog from 2002 on page 34.
Stamps of 50 and 200 Kuna were used not only for passports, but also for translated documents or requests.
Parity was in 1971: HRK 100 = DM 100.

Prince Eugen Gau :
|
Before the war III. Reich against the in theeses days existing Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Germans threatened the Hungarians that if they did not participate in that war, the Volksdeutsche would declare a German state at the territory of Bačka, Banat and eastern Syrmia all the way to Belgrade. That German state was supposed to be connected with a corridor that would go partly around the Danube river to the territory of III. Reich, that is, to the Slovenian Prekomurje, which was then part of III. Reich.
After the proclamation of the Independent State of Croatia April 10, 1941 this plans didn´t stop and the Volksdeutsche planed the proclamation of that state at the birthday of Adolf Hitler April 20, 1941. They had prepared 3 stamps with overprints on hungarian stamps, but the III. Reich didn´t support this plans, because they don´t want to have problems with the new state, the Independent State of Croatia and also not with Hungary.
The Hungarians were afraid of a possible realisation of such a exteritorial german territory and annexed first the Bačka at the April 11, 1941 and some days later Međimurije of the Independent State of Croatia at the April 16, 1941 so that a corridor between a possible "Prince Eugen Gau" and the III. Reich couldn´t be realized without a war between the Allies Hungary and the III. Reich.

OZAK :
|
The "Operation Zone Adriatisches Küstenland" ("Operations Zone Adriatisches Küstenland" or "OZAK") existed from September 10, 1943, and consisted of the Croatian and Slovenian territories occupied by the Kingdom of Italy, as well as the territories in northern Italy, which from October 8, 1943 fell under the control of the German III. Reich, which had the meaning as an operational zone of the German Wehrmacht, means exclusively military.
After the capitulation of Italy on September 8, 1943, the Great County of Raša were established by the Independent State of Croatia from the Croatian areas of Istria, the Kvarer Islands, the city of Rijeka, which was donated to the Kingdom of Italy by Serbian Minister Pasić of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia under the Treaty of Rapala in 1920, the city of Trieste and the present-day Slovenian coast.
The Independent State of Croatia could only formally establish the Great County of Raša, because since the capitulation of Italy on the territory that the Kingdom of Italy got from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia the III. Reich took control since October 1, 1943 over the entire Istrian peninsula, the cities of Rijeka, Sušak, Bakar, Kastav, Čabra and the island of Krk. Those Croatian territories were included in the "Operational Zone of the Adriatic Coast" ("OZAK") together with the Italian provinces of Friuli, Trieste and Gorica, and until the capitulation of Italy to the occupied Slovenian province of Ljubljana from the Italians.
From some German activities, such as the ban of the teaching of the Italian language in schools and the introduction of the Croatian language, it can be concluded that the III. Reich planned the reintegration of the "Operational Zone of the Adriatic Coast" into the Velika župa Raša (Great County of Raša) of the Independent State of Croatia.
The course of the war prevented that return, as well as the return of Sandžak and the Bay of Kotor from the III. Reich (which controled both areas) to the Independent State of Croatia.
